Description

Anyone who's seen the 1969 film "Gamera vs. Guillon" (or "Gamera vs. Guiron" and "Attack of the Monsters" in America), should easily get the reference here.

And for those of you who haven't...

The fifth film in the Gamera series has our giant turtle friend, heading for the desolated planet of Terra, to (what else) rescue some boys from a kidnapping, remote controlled alien saucer. Terra was once the home to a race of humanoid aliens, until their advance technology went out-of-control, and somehow resulted in the creation of multiple Space Gyaos monsters. The last remaining inhabitants of Terra, the alien sisters Forbella and Barbella (or however you spell their blasted names), are kept safe from the Space Gyaos by their knife-headed 'watchdog' monster Guillon, who routinely chops up the winged intruders into bloody pieces.

Guillon is expected to feast upon the remains of his victims as well, but the stench of the Space Gyaos is unpleasant even for him, and scraps are often left around. Hence this illustration, though I took liberties with Space Gyaos's design and gave it a more 1990s look.

According to some sources, a brand new monster was to be used as the common menace on Terra, but time and budget restraints forced the film's crew to just repaint the Gyaos suit (from a previous 1967 movie) silver. And instead of playing dumb, the fact that this otherwise unrelated species is dubbed the Space Gyaos, is proof that even the crew knew it was a half-hearted substitute for the originally planned creature.

As for the abandon monster, it's more then likely to be Malcopkarappa (AKA Marukoburappa and Malikopukarappa); an incredibly obscure creature of the Gamera franchise, who's popped up in limited edition toy sets, and briefly showed up in the 1990s produced short on the unmade film "Gamera vs. Garasharp". And because I'm a genius, here's a picture of the Malcopkarappa model from that last project:

I have to admit, as crappy as repainted monster suits are, at least the Space Gyaos looks the part of apocalyptic destroyers of an alien civilization, while Malcopkarappa looks like the lovable hybrid-child of Guilala and Matango!

Sadder still, that's all I know about the character.
