Obscure Kaiju Month ends tomorrow night, but will return next December...Or sooner, if there's a demand for such. Until than, I'll keep sharing what interesting characters that I can find in my PC storage.
From the mid sixties, all the way up to the late seventies, the legendary P Productions was responsible for some of the strangest and most creative Tokusatsu shows in the genre, for such colorful things. Including the likes of "The Space Giants", "Spectreman", "Lion Maru", and others.
But it's among their lesser known heroes, that's the subject of tonight's article; a jungle boy and his dinosaur guardian.
”Monster Prince” (”Kaiju Ouji”) was a 26 episode television program, which aired in 1967, at the height of the Kaiju Boom.
And followed the exploits of Takeru, a long lost Japanese boy who grew up on an island that time forgot, akin to Tarzan. But whereas Tarzan was raised and protected by apes, Takeru was watched over by a giant brontosaur; his surrogate family nicknamed Nessie.’
But on one fateful day, rat-like alien invaders arrive, and take over the lost world. And take control of the island dinosaurs, in order to conquer the Earth.
Soon after, Takeru is reunited with his birth parents and little sister, who all happen to be scientists. And with their help, both Takeru and Nessie the Brontosaur join a guerrilla-style military outfit, to fight off the rat-like aliens. And hopefully free his mind-controlled prehistoric brethren.
Halfway into the series, a second group of insectoid aliens arrive, complicating matters by resurrecting more vicious monsters from stolen museum fossils. And unleashing these new beasts across the globe, forcing Takeru, Nessie, and their allies to hunt them down.
