Created by the legendary Shotaro Ishinomori, ”Daitetsujin 17” (1977) was originally envisioned as an animated series. But switched to live action, and given a humorous slant, in order to differentiate it from all the other Super Robots filling up the airwaves back then.

Another added twist was with the titular protagonist himself, Iron Robot 17 (alias Giant Ironman 1-7).

17 (pronounced 1-7) isn't a simple machine piloted or controlled by humans, but a fully sentient, talking robot giant, who does what he want, when he wants!
And openly rebels against the criminal organization that built him, by reluctantly teaming up with the paramilitary group dubbed The Defenders (not the Marvel Comics one).

Though thankfully, 17 does chill out by adjusting his attitude, and becomes a true friend to humanity, as the series progresses.

Various episodes of “Daitetsujin 17” was re-edited and cobbled together to make the 1982 video release “Brain 17”. Though if you want to see the first episode uncut, click HERE to Veoh.

Even if the ending was too much like Giant Robo, I still thought this was a cool series
