The Krakens of Nira - December 2015

From the book entitled "Creatures Beyond Your Own (3rd Edition)" - an informative compendium written by various authors from across Nira:

The Kraken (or Krakens) are gigantic cephalopod leviathans, rare and mythical even among the many varied creatures and people of Nira. Krakens live the vast majority of their mysteriously long-lived lives deep within the abyssal ocean trenches, all across Nira’s vast seas.

Krakens have been known to come up to the surface and attack ships, but this is a most uncommon event as Krakens keep to themselves and hunt deep-sea fish and sea serpents, using the blinding flashing bio-luminescent lights embedded within their nautilus-like body shells, to confuse and stun their prey. They have ten large tentacles, four of which acting as pseudo-arms towards the front of their bodies.

Their ‘faces’ have eight tendrils while an uneven and an unconfirmed number of smaller jellyfish-like feelers sprout from the Krakens' back-shells, which is used to sense their surroundings since their own eyes are relatively small and unreliable, compared to the overall body mass. It should also be noted that due to such a massive size, Krakens have a series of flippers at the sides and back of their bodies, to help them swim about more effectively.

Based on eyewitness accounts (mainly from Mermaids and Bishop Fishes) and the occasional severed body part that washes ashore (which is sometimes cooked and sold as food if said parts are still in an edible condition), Krakens are confirmed to be 140 feet in length, making them far greater in size than that of the Giants, Dragons, Crasters, Blue Whales, and the Krakens' far smaller-but-no-less-large relatives known as Giant Squids (Architeuthis Niran).
