"Challenge of the Tiger" was one of many films to ride on the postmortem fame of martial artist and film maker Bruce Lee, after his tragic death in 1973. This rather bizarre sub-genre of Bruce Lee inspired films and outright rip-offs was quickly dubbed 'Brucesploitation' by film critics and audiences alike.

And went well into the late 1980's, before virtually ending before the 1990's rolled around. By that time, the Hong Kong film industry had a new generation of beloved action stars, who could headline their own films without the influential shadow of Bruce Lee, hanging over them.

Though to be fair, many of the new generation had their starts in Brucesploitation movies, years prior.

"Challenge of the Tiger" is one of the more offbeat examples of the sub-genre, without going into rather tasteless fantasy extremes. Such as having Bruce Lee fighting mummies in Hell, with the assistance of Popeye, of all people.

But it does have gratuitous topless tennis, and a bull getting his skull fractured through Kung-Fu Fisticuffs!

The title card seen here, was originally going to just feature Brandon by himself, ending the poor bovines life. But while sketching out the concept, I was suddenly inspired by the Brucesploitation phenomenon. And took the gag even further than what Brandon had suggested.

And ended up having Brandon wear the most disturbingly awesome cosplay ever conceived by the mind of Raf!

Look on the bright side; at least I didn't put Brandon in Yellow Face!

I'm all for paying respects to Bruce Lee. But I don't think this film is the way to do it.
